The first day of school is around the corner. If you’re not already in the classroom, you’re probably at working at home trying to decide your classroom layout or some first week activities. One thing I’ve always done is get a sample of their writing. These simple writing prompts are perfect for any grade, especially younger grades.

Students come to school with backpacks full of supplies. This prompt allows students to write about what’s in their bookbag which tells you a great deal about them. You can learn some of their favorite colors, tv shows, characters, or just read about finding a small fairy or mini monster in the bookbag!

I remember riding the bus to and from school. This prompt allows students to write about what happens when a clown comes on the bus. Maybe he brings lots of balloons. Maybe he dances and tells lots of jokes. Maybe he takes the students to clown school instead of regular school.

Recess. One of a student’s favorite time of day. Their imaginations are in full force. Why not take it into overdrive with this rocket ship scenerio. Will an alien pop out and want to know what school is life? Will the students explore the ship’s many compartments? Will they accidently blast off into space?

Who doesn’t love lunchtime! It’s even the teacher’s favorite time of day (even if we do have lunch duty). What if your students opened the lunchbox and found a magical key? Talking food? A million dollars? Let your students’ imagination soar!

A monster? Seems simple, but its what that monster does that’s what’s great. Is he the newest student in the class? Is the new teacher? Is he taking the place of another student and now that students goes to monster school? Only a kids imagination can tell you what happens next!
